En l’année 1284, en la ville d’Hamelin vint un joueur de flûte: un dératiseur. En ce temps là, la ville était envahie par les rats et les habitants mouraient de faim. Le maire de Hamelin promit au joueur de flûte une prime de mille écus pour les débarrasser des rats qui infestaient la ville. L’homme prit sa flûte et attira, par sa musique, les rats qui le suivirent jusqu’à la rivière Weser qui arrose la ville, où ils se noyèrent. Bien que la ville fût ainsi libérée des rongeurs, les habitants revinrent sur leur promesse et refusèrent de payer le joueur de flûte en le chassant à coup de pierres.
Il quitta le pays, mais revint quelques semaines plus tard. Lorsqu’il y eut une nuit paisible, il joua de nouveau de sa flûte, attirant cette fois les enfants de Hamelin. Cent trente garçons et filles le suivirent hors de la ville jusqu’à une grotte qui se referma derrière eux. Selon certaines versions, le joueur de flûte aurait aussi emmené les enfants de Hamelin à la rivière ou au sommet d’une montagne. Les parents, eux, ne les revirent jamais plus.
